For those of you who don't know about this race, please let me explain more…
When I began my GI fellowship in 2012, on my first month of the GI Inpatient Consult Service all bright eyed and bushy tailed, I met a lovely 19 year old runner who we diagnosed with severe Crohn’s disease. The extent of her disease was severe enough that she needed to have surgery and deferred her first year of University. In my naiveté, I promised her I would make her better…so much better that she would be able to run marathons/races again. I was so confident in my promise (and because I have a big mouth) I told her if she got better, I would run her first 5K with her. In her year off, or gap year, Mackenzie (our protagonist patient) not only did fantastically well from a clinical perspective but also became highly involved with the CCFA. She held me to my word, and the inaugural 5K was born in 2013. Given the success of this race, she was selected to be the Massachusetts CCFA Local Hero of the year; and was the 2017 Rising Volunteer of the Year!
In case you’re bored and want to see me unnecessarily sweating on camera, here is a video of her story: https://youtu.be/1nTFIW7CrcQ
This year will be the 7th Annual Race! Many, both within the Division of GI, the hospital at large and outside of the hospital, have come out and run/walk the race over the years and can attest to how much fun it is! If anything, it gives you a chance to spend the day on the Cape!!
To date, She has raised over $100,000 for the CCFA, and our team the "GROVESTARS" consistently has been a top raiser!!
This year the run/walk will be happening on Saturday June 15th, 2019!. Again, all proceeds will go to the CCFA. The race will take place on the Cape (Henry T Wing School, Sandwich MA) where she is from and should be a great day! You don’t have to be a runner to enjoy the day. Many have brought their children, pets and loved ones to enjoy the lovely walk through Sandwich, MA.
