As many of you know, the parrots at the New England Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary have been a big part of my life over the last 11 years. I've learned much about animal -- and human -- behavior through my close interactions with a variety of intelligent species. This is the first 5K race I've joined in 25 years (wow!) and I'm excited for you to help me reach my goal!
From our Executive Director Karen Windsor:
"In the early hours of April 1, a fan on a heat exchange unit in the north wing of our facility ignited, and our beautiful sanctuary was set ablaze. It was a fast-moving fire; Eighty-five of our precious parrots were lost. All of our cockatoos, gone. All five of our Patagonian cavies perished. The north section of the sanctuary, roughly one-third of the facility, burned to the ground. Our fire alarm system had alerted the local fire station and firefighters were onsite within minutes. It was only because o the quick response that we did not lose the entire facility. The firefighters saved the lives of nearly 300 parrots."
Many of you have already reached out and given in this past month, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you have ever experienced a close relationship with an animal, you may have some idea of the heartbreak we feel over this loss. Now is the time to rebuild. Deepest thanks to all my friends and family who support me and this exotic wildlife organization that is so dear to my heart. I appreciate you helping me reach my goal.
